Njaya Lodge, Nkhata Bay, Malawi
Njaya veranda Chikale beach, Njaya

“Njaya Lodge was a magical spot. The kind of place you could wake up in one morning and realise that you were supposed to be back at work months ago.” ‘Swahili for the broken hearted’ by Peter More (Bantam Books)

Njaya Lodge is Nkhata Bay's first "Responsible travel" retreat, opening it’s doors for business in 1994. Since then thousands of international travellers, flash-packers and holiday-makers have arrived, stayed and then stayed for a bit longer….
Visitors have included, from the music world, Andy Kershaw, Will Young and veteran crooner David Essex!

Lake MalawiNjaya is the perfect destination for a two week beachholiday, or as a refreshing stop off on your way to the islands or after a game viewing trip to the Nyika Plateau or South Luangwa in Zambia.

Described as ‘legendary’ by the Lonely Planet, this idyllic retreat is situated on Chikale Beach, just outside the vibrant port town of Nkhata Bay on the northern shores of Lake Malawi.

What makes Njaya really special is that you are guaranteed an amazing holiday for a fraction of the price of other tourist hotels. You will also be secure in the knowledge that some of the money you pay really does go back into the local community.

Njaya chalet on lakesideInspired by Thailand, accommodation is either simply furnished bamboo chalets with shady verandahs or comfortable ensuite cottages set in lush tropical gardens.

Prices range from between 8 Euros a night for budget accommodation and go up to 20 Euros per night for family cottages.
2-3 week all-inclusive package rates are also available.

All of the chalets overlook Chikale beach - an enchanting sandy cove shaded by Mango and Wild Fig trees. The fresh water of the lake is crystal clear and has been likened to a giant aquarium with excellent snorkelling opportunities to see unique colourful ciclid fish.

Lake Malawi is a wonderful place for young children who are learning to swim. Chikale Beach provides a clean, safe Bilharzia-free environment for splashing around, as well as lots of nice smooth rocks to jump off!

At sunset you can take a boat trip along the lakeshore and see black monkeys swinging from the trees and have the chance to feed fish to our local friendly fish eagle!

Activities include scuba diving, kayaking, horse riding, hill walking and trekking to remote mountain villages.
Game viewing trips can also be arranged to Vwaza Marsh and the spectacular Nyika Plateau and South Luangwa in Zambia.

Charter flights for trips can be arranged on request.
